Frequently Asked Questions

What is Disability Care?

Disability care encompasses a wide range of personalised services and supports intended for people living with disabilities. Through an effective disability care plan, those with physical and mental disabilities can live independently and confidently while improving their quality of life.

What Services do Disability Support Workers Provide?

Disability support workers provide many different types of services, depending on their clients’ unique needs. Generally, they will provide their clients with physical (think assistance with daily tasks like meal preparation) and emotional support. If necessary, they will also help their clients learn invaluable skills like financial and social skills. They also provide ongoing companionship and social support for their clients.

What is a Care Plan, and how is it Developed?

A care plan is a guide that defines care and supports both the client’s needs and goals. It typically includes the type of support required, how health professionals will provide that support and more. They are based on personal details, goals and objectives (both long & short) that then create detail for the supports. Developing such plans involves needs assessments and collaboration between the client, their loved ones, and their health professionals.

What Support is Available for Families and Carers of People With Disabilities?

Typically people can obtain support via the NDIS and Medicate rebates or Carer allowances through Services Australia as well. If you’re caring for someone with a disability, you my also find help at your local council.

What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

The NDIS is a federally funded scheme provided by the Australian government that allows those with disabilities to access financial support. With these additional funds, individuals with disabilities can achieve their goals, whether those goals are learning new job skills or connecting with the community.

How Does NDIS Funding Work?

The NDIS provides funding to eligible Australians with significant and permanent disabilities to access supports that improve independence, participation, and quality of life. Funding is tailored to the participant’s individual goals and allocated across three main categories: Core Supports (daily living assistance), Capacity Building (skills development), and Capital Supports (assistive technology and home modifications). Participants can choose to manage their funding themselves, through a Plan Manager, or by the NDIA. Funds must be used for disability-related services that are deemed reasonable and necessary, excluding general living expenses and healthcare costs. Plans are reviewed annually to adjust for changing needs, ensuring participants have the right level of support to achieve their goals.

What are the Responsibilities of a Registered NDIS Provider?

Registered NDIS providers are responsible for delivering high-quality, participant-focused services aligned with NDIS plans and service agreements. They must comply with the NDIS Practice Standards, Code of Conduct, and safeguard participants’ rights by preventing abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Providers are required to ensure worker screening, training, and professional development, maintain robust incident management systems, and report serious incidents to the NDIS Commission. They must uphold financial accountability by providing clear invoices and value-for-money services, protect participant data, and continuously improve their practices through feedback and audits. Legal compliance, proper insurance, and transparent governance are also critical responsibilities.
