Disability care encompasses a wide range of personalised services and supports intended for people living with disabilities. Through an effective disability care plan, those with physical and mental disabilities can live independently and confidently while improving their quality of life. 

Disability support workers provide many different types of services, depending on their clients’ unique needs. Generally, they will provide their clients with physical (think assistance with daily tasks like meal preparation) and emotional support. If necessary, they will also help their clients learn invaluable skills like financial and social skills. They also provide ongoing companionship and social support for their clients.

A care plan is a guide that defines care and supports both the client’s needs and goals. It typically includes the type of support required, how health professionals will provide that support and more. They are based on personal details, goals and objectives (both long & short) that then create detail for the supports. Developing such plans involves needs assessments and collaboration between the client, their loved ones, and their health professionals.

They must comply with the NDIS Practice Standards, Code of Conduct, and safeguard participants’ rights by preventing abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Providers are required to ensure worker screening, training, and professional development, maintain robust incident management systems, and report serious incidents to the NDIS Commission. They must uphold financial accountability by providing clear invoices and value-for-money services, protect participant data, and continuously improve their practices through feedback and audits.
